Assisted Living, Enhanced Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing Facilities: What are the Differences?

There are many differences between assisted living and enhanced assisted living and nursing homes. One of the main differences is with the Independence of the residents. In assisted living seniors typically come and go freely from the home. They are asked to sign out so as to make the staff aware of their absence, but they do not need permission. In a nursing home, a resident would need to plan ahead and get permission from the staff to go on an outing with family or friends. Another difference is in the level of care that each home can offer. Both Assisted living and nursing homes provide assistance with activities of daily living, but nursing homes provide the highest levels, such as caring for someone totally bed bound. Enhanced Assisted Living can provide more care than an assisted living can provide, but still not as much as a nursing home.

Assisted living provides a safe, secure home for a senior with 24/7 staffing in the building. The caregivers and support staff are available to respond to any needs throughout the day or night. There are many different types of communities. Some provide a studio apartments only, others have studio, one bedroom or two bedroom style apartments. Working with a senior living advisor will save senior’s time because we advise on the style of each community as well as the care levels provided.

Amenities in Assisted Living Typically Include:

  • Senior Living SolutionsCare Plan is developed for each resident. This may include medication management, assistance bathing and dressing, showering assistance, reminders and escorts to meals and activities and more.

Nursing Home Care

Nursing Home Care provides the highest level of care, outside of hospitalization.  A Licensed Physician supervises each patient’s care, and a medical professional is typically always on site.  Typically residents in these facilities need skilled nursing care and personal care. Their care needs are beyond what an assisted living can provide. Nursing homes may also provide Physical and Occupational Therapy and may have a dedicated rehabilitation center in the nursing home.

What is the Cost of Assisted Living?Senior Living Solutions

The cost of assisted living varies greatly depending on many factors, such as location and size of apartment. Assisted living is generally less expensive than nursing home care in the same geographic area. Fees vary across States and region to region.  A senior living adviser will know the current rates of each home and will be able to help you determine which community may fit in your budget.
